Jen, I think your writing has definitely come a long way over the course of the semester, since your first ELIC essay. Your rewrite was very good. If you would like to work with me on any future writing projects, for English or other classes, I'm happy to help. Have a great summer and it was great to have you in class.

I like the idea of thinking anew about the lion's habitat. We get a little of that in Tiger's Bride, when Beauty joins the tiger on his nest of straw (his bed). But there's a lot more you could do with it! Keep brainstorming, and I'm sure your partner will be able to help brainstorm as well.

Yeah! And here's another one that will make you a little bit sad: remember Babar? It's sooo about the rich white folk conquering a land that belongs to others. In grad-English speak, we call that "colonialism". To think about texts and their colonial implications is called "post-colonial". :)

“The PowerBook demonstrates that by showing the risk involved in Lancelot’s search for Guinevere we see that risk complements the overall theme of the novel: our continuous search for meaning and identity in life.”

This is how I'd narrow down your thesis, it seemed a little long and intimidating.

I really like your thesis and thinking back to your paper, you make a good argument. I think however, that you should make your thesis a little more specific so that it is possible for someone else to argue against it! Otherwise i think you are on a good track!

I did not get a chance to read your essay because we had 5 people total in our group but to me, you thesis seems too wordy. I would try to simplfy it alittle bit. Overall, I like the outline of your paper.

Discomfort is . . . uncomfortable. No doubt that this book is meant to push on some boundaries of comfort that we are used to. It's supposed to be confusing. And uncomfortable. But also funny. And about the nebulousness of writing.

How might our discomfort as readers relate intimately (heh) to what's going on the novel? How might it help us make meaning?

I had the same thoughts as you seem to be having. It seems like Ali was born as a girl, but then since his mother changed him into a boy he has completly become a man? I'm not really sure how that could be seeing as how they used tulips, but I guess that's just another factor of this book's strangeness. I am really confused by this book too, and I am VERY glad I am not the only one....or the only one who is not enjoying this book. Hopefully, it will change and things will start to get better? I kind of doubt it though.

So how does this information do for your thoughts on how religion is deployed in the novel? It's great that your research on Atta might be useful as evidence for your paper.

I think religion in the text is a really interesting topic to pursue, as are the trends you find in belief. I have to admit that I haven't thought a lot about this, so I'm interested to see what evidence you find and what kind of thesis statement it supports. Keep up the good work.
